MCA & DoLS Courses

Mental capacity, consent & safeguards courses

The MCA & DoLS course provides staff with a clear understanding of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, its five core principles, and how it protects individuals through choice, empowerment and safe decision‑making. Delivered as face to face training in Hull, Yorkshire and LIncolnshire, the course explains who the Act applies to, how to support someone to make decisions, how to assess capacity using the URWC criteria, and what it means when a person lacks capacity for a specific decision. The training also covers types of consent, best‑interest decision processes, the role of safeguarding including Section 42 enquiries, and the circumstances in which liberty may be restricted. It introduces Gillick competence and Fraser guidelines for under‑16s, examples of deprivation of liberty, and the purpose of DoLS in ensuring individuals are protected when their freedom is limited for safety reasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can attend each course?

We can train up to 12 delegates per session.

This ensures sessions remain interactive, engaging and manageable, while still being cost effective for your service. Keeping numbers capped also allows our trainers to give each learner individual attention and support.

How long do your courses last?

Most of our courses are delivered as half day sessions.

Our Moving and Handling training is typically longer due to the practical element. Every delegate is required to take part in hands on exercises using equipment, ensuring they feel confident and competent in real working situations.

Where qualifications or refresher requirements differ, we will always advise you in advance.

How long does it take to receive certificates?

We aim to issue certificates within 7 to 10 working days following the course.

For accredited qualifications, certificates are processed through the relevant awarding body and issued as soon as verification has been completed.

Who are your courses accredited by?

Our accredited qualifications are awarded through nationally recognised awarding organisations:

  • Highfield Qualifications for our First Aid and Mental Health courses
  • TrainerQuals for our healthcare training qualifications

This ensures your staff receive recognised, compliant certification that meets regulatory standards.

Do you deliver training at our care home?

Yes. We deliver training at your care home or healthcare setting, allowing us to use your own equipment, policies and real life scenarios to make the learning practical and relevant to your team.

We also have fully equipped training classrooms available in:

  • Kingston upon Hull
  • Scunthorpe
  • Leeds

Our centres provide a professional learning environment for open courses, Train the Trainer programmes and qualifications where off site delivery may be preferred.

Can training be tailored to our specific challenges?

Absolutely. We understand that no two services are the same. Every home has its own team dynamics, resident needs and operational pressures. That is why we do not believe in a one size fits all approach to training.

All of our trainers hold Level 3 teaching qualifications, attend regular local authority training updates as part of their continuing professional development, and bring a combined 60 plus years of hands on healthcare experience.

This depth of knowledge allows us to create bespoke awareness sessions built around your home’s unique challenges. Whether you are addressing specific incidents, strengthening compliance, or developing confidence within your team, we can shape the training to reflect real situations your staff face every day.

Our aim is always to deliver training that is practical, relevant and immediately transferable into practice.

The Classroom

While technology-enabled learning has gained prominence, the classroom setting remains a cornerstone of workforce training due to its ability to foster interaction, hands-on practice, immediate feedback, and a conducive environment for comprehensive learning and professional growth. A classroom facility offers several benefits for delivering training sessions:

1

Interactive Learning

Classrooms allow participants to engage with the material, ask questions, and participate in discussions, fostering a more dynamic learning environment.

2

Facilitator Presence

In a classroom, the trainer is physically present, enabling direct communication, instant feedback, and the ability to see participants’ understanding.

3

Resource Availability

Our classrooms are equipped with resources to enhance the trainer’s ability to present information effectively and cater to different learning styles.

4

Group Activities

Classroom settings facilitate group activities, and practical exercises, enabling participants to apply theoretical knowledge and reinforces key concepts.
